And what causes its ferocious dust storms? The red planet’s color comes from its iron-rich dust. As for its storms, innocent-looking dust particles warm up in the sun, warm dust meets cold air and creates wind, and soon a storm is taking over the whole planet. Is there life on this dusty red planet? Spacecraft first landed in 1976 and began searching. They’ve found promising signs: fossils that look like microbes, and signs that Mars might once have had enough water to sustain life and could still have water underground.
