Born in Livorno, he began his artistic studies in Italy before moving to Paris in 1906. Influenced by the artists in his circle of friends and associates — especially Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, the Fauves, and Paul Cézanne — and a wide range of genres and art movements, Modigliani's oeuvre was a unique and idiosyncratic pastiche.
