Painter and sculptor Amedeo Clemente Modigliani was an Italian artist of Jewish heritage who spent most of his working life in France. Born in Livorno, he began his artistic studies in Italy before moving to Paris in 1906. Influenced by the artists in his circle of friends and associates — especially Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, the Fauves, and Paul Cézanne — and a wide range of genres and art movements, Modigliani's oeuvre was a unique and idiosyncratic pastiche.
