Ancient Mexico, c. 400 BC to 100 AD. A fantastic and extremely rare whistle figure in the form of a horned god or shaman. No parallels exist in any of the contemporary references, this is an extremely rare piece. The large round eyes indicate a drug-induced state of trance, the 2 pronounced horns on his head and spiral ram’s horns indicate a realm below earthly confines. A single hole in the forehead would have once acted as an intonation hole when blown as a whistle, although the rest of the whistle has blown to dust in antiquity. On the back in black is inked “Chalco," referring to an area in central Mexico surrounding a lake that is no longer there. This is a special and particularly haunting ancient artifact! With custom metal stand.
