Great Britain. George III (1760 - 1820 AD). Huge copper two pence "Cartwheel Penny" coin, dated 1797. The front depicts the laureate bust of George III right, inscription GEORGIUS III D.G. REX around / The back depicts Brittania seated upon a rock with shield, waves around, holding trident and olive branch, ship in the background, inscription BRITANNIA 1797. Minted at Birmingham, England. Measures a whopping 41mm (1 5/8") diameter, and 5mm (almost 1/4") thick! Weighs an impressive 55.11 grams. Coppery-brown tone, dings and dents from extensive circulation in olden times. Provenance: Ex De Père, WI collection. *** King George III was the British king who fought the Americans in the Revolutionary War, and was the King George depicted in the Broadway show “Hamilton”.
