One of the first coins to depict Christ. Byzantine Empire, Reign of Basil II and Constantine VIII, circa 976-1035 AD. Class A bronze follis, Constantinople mint. Bust of Christ facing with book of Gospels, +EMMANOVHA IX-XC. rev: IҺSЧS/ XRISTЧS/ ЬASILЄЧ/ ЬASILЄ ("Jesus Christ King of Kings") in four lines, ornament above and below. Coin diameter 30mm. Deep coppery, almost black patina, with excellent detail. Encapsulated and graded Choice Very Fine by NGC. Archival slab measures 3.125" x 2.125" x 0.125".
