Fish remains of remarkable state of preservation and beauty have been found in calcareous concretions in the Santana Formation of north-east Brazil. This concretion from the Santana Formation follows the contours of its entombed gar-like fish. It suggests an episode of rapid burial and fossilization. In some Santana specimens, fossilization was so rapid that detailed cellular structure may be seen with microscopic examination.
