Product Description
The Wing celebrates the simple beauty and apparent magic of an aerofoil profile. This pure form has been used as the basis for the aluminum body that houses the Nixie electronics. The resulting wing-shaped body is raised up on two aeroframe-style legs shaped to give the impression of imminent flight. Handmade from aluminum and (fumed) oak, the Wing features six Z566M Nixie tubes giving HH:MM:SS and can be configured to display the date at specific intervals. There is an alarm clock function and a variety of adjustable parameters to control the display appearance.
Nixie tubes were invented in 1955, and were a means for early electronic devices to display numbers. They consist of a clear glass tube, with the numbers from 0 – 9 are stacked behind each other. The tube is filled with neon gas and then sealed. Each digit has its own connection, and when a small electrical current is applied, the neon gas around the digit is ionized, which causes the distinctive orange glow. There is no heat produced, so the tubes can last up to 20 years.
