1997 50th Anniversary Jackie Robinson PROOF Deep Cameo Silver Dollar

Up for sale is a 1997 S (San Francisco) Jackie Robinson 50TH Proof Deep Cameo Silver Dollar Commemorative coin. This historical collectible coin was produced by the United States Mint and was specifically designed and created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Jackie breaking of the color barrier in Major League Baseball and the legacy that he left to society.

Most of these coins were removed from the original packaging and sold with just the coin. To find these coins with ALL of the original packaging and the original Certificate of Authenticity is very rare!!

Jack Roosevelt Robinson was an American professional baseball player who became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball in the modern era. Robinson broke the baseball color line when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947.

Jackie went on to have a decade-long Hall of Fame career despite repeated threats and abuse from fans and opponents. He was also a vocal Civil Rights Activist. Robinson served on the board of the NAACP and advocated for greater racial integration in sports. He died in 1972 at age 53. MLB retired Robinson’s jersey, No. 42, in 1997, and the league celebrates his legacy and accomplishments annually on Jackie Robinson Day.

The obverse design depicts Robinson stealing home plate, as he did during a 1955 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

The reverse design features the Jackie Robinson Foundation's 50th anniversary logo of Robinson's breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. An identical 50th anniversary commemorative patch was also worn by all Major League Baseball players during the 1997 season.
