The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor’s mission is to commemorate the service and sacrifice of men and women who were killed or wounded in action, representing Purple Heart recipients from the Civil War to the present day. The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have been wounded or killed in enemy action. The National Purple Heart Honor Mission is dedicated to paying tribute to our nation's combat wounded through special outreach and educational programming.

On May 28, 1932, 136 World War I veterans became the first recipients of the Purple Heart. Since then, it has been awarded to an estimated 1.8 million servicemen and servicewomen. The Purple Heart is currently awarded to any member of the U.S. Armed Forces who has been wounded or killed by enemy action.

The obverse (heads) design features the Purple Heart medal. Five stars represent the five branches of the military.
The reverse (tails) design shows a woman in a World War I helmet as she bandages a wounded soldier on a stretcher. More than 23,000 women nurses served in the Army and Navy during the war.
