Non-Tip Bowl // Copper

Most pet owners are familiar with the hard-to-clean slime that forms on bowls. It's also long been known that water contained in copper vessels or transported in copper conveyance systems was of a higher quality. These systems didn’t develop a slime layer. This is due to the Oligodynamic Effect, something that cannot occur with non-reactive surfaces like plastic, ceramic, or even stainless steel - which is why copper has been commonly used for pipes and plumbing since the days of ancient Egypt.

These pet bowls are electroplated with a thick layer of copper, on top of a stainless steel core. Not only is this style incredibly attractive and durable, but the electroplating process kills bacteria more effectively than polished or native rolled copper. On plain stainless steel, microbes such as e.coli can survive for weeks. Studies have shown that solid copper destroys over 99.9% of most kind of bacteria within 2 hours of surface contact, while after six hours of inoculation, a full 50% of infectious adenovirus particles survived on stainless steel.

Copper is also an essential part of all cats' and dogs' diet. And humans, too. It's needed for the development of red blood cells and the formation of collagen, bone and connective tissue among other important functions. In the US, dog food must contain a minimum of 7.3mg of copper per kg of food to be marketed as “complete and balanced”.
