A race descended from the Germanic tribes who emigrated to the island mixed with the indigenous peoples they encountered, the Anglo-Saxons were the founders of the nation of England. Up until the Norman Conquest of the 11th century the culture of the Anglo-Saxons dominated the Isle, and many aspects of that culture remained to shape and inform the nation that was born out of the invasion of William the Conqueror.
