The Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir Vertical from Enriquez Estate Wines is not just another product from the Petaluma Gap in the Sonoma Coast area of California. This vertical of Pinot Noir is a labor of love for winemaker Cecilia Enriquez, a first generation Mexican-American woman producer who started making wine at 23. She currently produces around 600-700 cases annually, and less than 300 cases were produced for each of these vintages.

The 2011-2013 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs are a beautiful example of how delicious older wines like Pinot Noirs can be. Most Pinot Noirs have an average shelf life or about 5-7 years, but for the Petaluma Gap, Pinot Noirs can easily age 10-15 years.

This vertical also highlights how the climate in a particular year influences the wine produced when keeping terroir constant. Being that these Pinot Noirs are from the Petaluma Gap, they have to survive against the daily wind and fog that comes in from the Pacific Coast. As a result, the grapes develop thicker skins in order to survive, as well as a longer hang time that leads to more concentrated flavors. Those thicker skins and concentrated flavors— with ideal levels of acidity— create beautiful, delicious darker berried flavors with hints of earth that can age gracefully over a longer timeframe.
