Product Description

The German Physiks Unicorn Mk II is a full-range omnidirectional loudspeaker. Its unusual looks are due to it being a very unusual and at the same time a very capable design. It uses a single German Physiks DDD driver mounted on top of a cabinet with a complex internal structure. The single driver covers the entire audio range, providing a sound that is exceptionally natural and coherent. This also avoids the commonly used crossover point in the mid-range, where our hearing is most sensitive, thereby improving clarity. The lowest frequencies are handled by a tuned horn system and it is the design of this that dictates the Unicorn’s unusual look, where the size of the cabinet panels and even the finish used affects the sound.

Like all German Physiks loudspeakers, the Unicorn Mk II allows you to hear a stereo image with the correct tonal balance in a wide range of positions in the room — much as you would in a real concert. Unlike a conventional loudspeaker, the Unicorn Mk II does not constrain you to one position in the room in order to hear a great sound. Because of this, long listening sessions are more relaxed and enjoyable and you can more easily share your music with friends and family. Lovers of the classic horn type loudspeakers will really appreciate the musicality and life that the Unicorn brings to the music.

Holger Mueller

German Physiks managing director, Holger Mueller, became interested in loudspeaker design about 25 years ago, when he could not find a loudspeaker that sounded like real life. The development of the DDD driver solved this problem. The Borderland Mk I, the first German Physiks loudspeaker to use the DDD driver, was released in 1992. Mueller then set to work to design a range of loudspeakers using the DDD driver, always seeking to increase the sense of reality and emotion that could be achieved. His present objective is to design a smaller and simpler DDD driver that can be used for home theatre applications.
