He holds the world record for highest-selling auction price by a living artist, having sold one of his original Balloon Dog sculptures in 2013 for over $58 million. His work has been controversial with critics, with some claiming it is pioneering, unusual and political, while others dismiss it as kitschy, cynical and self-serving.
