La Jota Vineyard lies high upon a volcanic plateau, looking east over Napa Valley. Surrounded by pine, fir, oak, and madrone trees, this Howell Mountain estate stands out because of its cool, windswept climate. The winery was initially founded in 1898 by Swiss newspaperman Frederick Hess, who purchased 327 acres of the Rancho La Jota Mexican land grant. Hess built the winery from volcanic ash rock quarried on the property. This historic stone winery still houses the winemaking operations today, where La Jota proudly carries on their century-old winemaking tradition.
There are 28 acres planted across three estate vineyards. The Winery Block vineyard sits next to the original 19th century stone winery, producing soft-textured Cabernet Sauvignon for wines of earlier approachability.
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most distinctive wines in this range from La Jota. Powerful and vertical in feel, the 2016 offers quite a bit of energy. A rush of blueberry jam, dark chocolate, licorice, and grilled herbs give the wine its drive and pure power, while savory overtones add lovely aromatic complexity. La Jota’s 2016 Merlot is plush, rich and radiant, all qualities that can be enjoyed upon release. A dollop of Tannat (4.5%) and Petit Verdot (5.5%) add explosive energy. Black cherry, grilled herb, pepper, new leather, and mint all run through this plush, savory Merlot. This is very nicely done.
