Carrying on a 200-year-old tradition of distilling excellence, the Lagavulin distillery is said to be one of the oldest distilleries on Islay. Founded in 1816 by farmer John Johnston and later led by Peter Mackie in 1890, the name Lagavulin would become the last word on the delicacy of Islay malts. Miles and miles of peat bog in the west of the island provides the raw material which imbues the barley with their iconic smoky flavor. The rich, peaty water from the tranquil Lochan Sholum in the hills above the distillery adds to the unique flavors. It takes time, but the Lagavulin team knows that patience is a virtue, and rushing good whisky is just not how things are done in Islay.
In 1742 there were at least ten illicit stills at Lagavulin. It would be another 74 years until local farmer John Johnston founded the first legal distillery in sight of Dunyvaig Castle. Its name may have changed over the years, but the quiet power of peat and smoke that pervades this masculine malt has not. Lagavulin 8 Year Old Single Malt Scotch features notes of lemon peel, sweet smoke, dried green herbs, baked apricot, and cedar that rise from the glass. While lighter in body, it is rather powerful with rich smoke and minerals balanced by allusions to honeysuckle and white peach.
Combining Nick Offerman's love for Guinness, woodworking, and his dad, Lagavulin 11 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky Offerman Edition is finished in Guinness casks for distinct layers that are as complex as the whisky's story. Finished in barrels from the Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Baltimore, MD, this golden-brown elixir of the gods has been imbued with traces of chocolate, wisps of vanilla and a chili-pepper kick that stays in the finish until the party is over.
The nose is classic Lagavulin with BBQ smoke, brine, and citrus notes, along with a fresh new layer of vanilla and chocolate. The aromas translate onto the palate with salted caramel, campfire, sea spray, and fruit. The dark chocolate and vanilla notes are joined by a touch of chili pepper. The finish lingers with peat and chili pepper.
