Small-size Federal Reserve Bank Notes are a distinctly different series from the familiar green-seal Federal Reserve Notes. The emergency issue was necessary due to the public hoarding of cash caused by the Great Depression-era bank failures. So in an effort to stabilize the U.S.’s then-failing economy, these notes were printed in mass quantity on already-prepared sheets meant for series 1929 National Bank

Notes in denominations $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. They feature brown seals and serial numbers, just like National Bank Notes, and display “NATIONAL CURRENCY” across the top. The letter designations for
the Federal Reserve Districts appear four times on each note in bold black font, displaying where a National Bank Note title would have been.

Since these notes were printed on sheets that had been created for National Bank Notes, they needed to be modified swiftly without any delay. While National Bank Notes had a space labeled for the bank’s
President and Cashier’s signatures, Federal Reserve Bank Notes had a bar printed over these titles and replaced the titles with signatures of Federal Reserve Bank officials. The phrase “or by like deposit of other securities” was also added after “Secured by United States bonds deposited with the Treasurer of the United States of America.” This was done in an effort to emphasize the Federal backing of these notes. Production of Federal Reserve Bank Notes was discontinued in 1934 and while they remain legal
tender today, they are seldom seen in circulation.
