Product Description

The Morgan silver dollar is among the most historic United States coins ever minted. Named after the U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan, it was produced from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. The obverse of the coin depicts Liberty as a youthful woman wearing a Phrygian cap, originally worn by emancipated slaves of ancient Rome, together with a headdress of cotton and wheat— staples of the U.S. economy. The reverse features an American bald eagle with outstretched wings, symbolic of the power of the U.S. government. The eagle bears in its great talons both an olive branch and 3 arrows, representing a nation of peace but one that is poised for war.

The dollar was authorized by the passage of the Bland-Allison Act in 1878, which required the Treasury to purchase an enormous 2 to 4 million dollars’ worth of silver each month to be coined into dollars. Later, in 1918, passage of the Pittman Act ultimately led to the melting of over 270 million Morgan dollars held in treasury reserves. Today, the choice few that remain are cherished specimens of a bygone era that serve to immortalize the memory of a young, prosperous, and powerful United States of America. Offered here is a high-grade mint-state specimen (MS66 out of 70) with brilliant surfaces minted at New Orleans in 1885.

A Note About Coin Grading & Certification:
This is a certified coin and its quality and authenticity are guaranteed. The condition of a coin is officially graded on a 70-point scale according to standards set forth by the American Numismatic Association. Grades under 60 represent circulated grades, while grades from 60 through 70 represent uncirculated, or “mint-state” grades. Very few, if any, older coins are known to exist in perfect MS70 grade. Analogous to GIA certification for diamonds, independent expert certification services examine coins, certify authenticity, assign consensus grades, and encapsulate them in a sonically sealed, hard plastic holder with grade and unique serial number displayed. The two leading firms, Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), have become widely recognized for their objective grading practices and high industry standards. They continue to provide reliable consumer protection for rare coin collectors and investors and preserve the integrity of the rare coin industry. A third company, Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), also provides secondary verification of previously certified coins. A green oval sticker is applied to those specimens CAC believes meet their strict standards of quality for the certified grade. The coin offered for sale in this listing has been certified by one or more of these leading services so you can be confident in its authenticity and stated condition.
