The iconic Gullwing Mercedes would have never entered the production if it wasn’t for a chap called Max Hoffman, New York based importer of cars. Mr. Hoffman, who just signed a contract to import Mercedes’ cars to the US, was very impressed by the W194 race car, persuading Mercedes to build a road-going version of it. Mercedes being on a tight budget initially refused, but realizing the chance they were offered, made a right decision after all. As Mr. Hoffman insisted, the new sports car was to be built on the chassis of the W194 — but there was a problem.

See, the W194 was built on a tight budget, taking an old, heavy engine and joining it with a frame of very rigid and light construction, but triangular, almost bicycle-like design. In order to sustain the rigidity of the frame, the car had to be built with very tall door sills and rather small doors. This wouldn’t have been a problem for an open-top race car — you could have just jumped inside without any trouble whatsoever. But for a car with a roof, German engineers had to come up with a solution — a specific door design which would make getting in and out of the car as easy as in any other Mercedes.
