The Bioluminescent Bio-Orb is an interactive night light, air purifier, objet d'art, conversation starter, and science lesson all in one incredible glass sphere. This 6" glass micro-aquarium is filled with bioluminescent plankton (algae) that produce mesmerizing blue light at night when gently swirled.

The Bio-Orb will light up naturally, night after night, with minimal care. The living PyroDino marine plankton responsible for this glow are classified as Pyrocystis fusiformis (aka Dinoflagellates) and can be found in oceans all over the world. Much like a houseplant, they require light to grow, and work to refresh your space by pulling CO2 and other pollutants out of the air and replacing it with fresh oxygen.

To get started, simply pour the contents of the included PyroDino pouches into the Bio-Orb, then place it in a moderately well lit area out of direct sunlight. Wait five to seven days before feeding with DinoNutrients, and watch as your unique miniature aquarium comes to life in spectacular fashion.

FAQ

What can you use too hold the 6” orb?

The Bio-Orb has a flat bottom so it can rest on any flat surface.

Do you use saltwater or regular tap water?

The bioluminescent algae in the Bio-Orb is a marine (saltwater) species.
They can only survive in saltwater conditions. NO FRESH WATER SHOULD BE ADDED.

How do you care for it? What do I need to do to maintain it?

The Bioluminescent Bio-Orb is similar to a houseplant in care and longevity. Bio-Orbs contain plant-like algae (PyroDinos) which require daily light and the occasional addition of DinoNutrients (bi-monthly). With proper care, a Bioluminescent Bio-Orb will last for over a year or more.

Is the algae time sensitive before they are no longer viable?

The algae will require daily light but can be kept in the white spout pouch for a few weeks (with daily light).

Can I add any actual fish to the orb?

No, we do not recommend adding any fish to the Bio-Orb.

Is this safe for children?

The glass micro-aquarium should be used with adult supervision. The
contents of the micro-aquarium are non-toxic.

Can more than the two pouches that come with box be added?

Yes. The two pouches are a starter culture for the Large Bio-Orb. The Bio-Orb performs best when 1/4 to 3/4 full. So adding more PyroDino would not be an issue as long as you kept it under 3/4 full.

Can you add the algae to a salt water fish tank?

Yes, you can add PyroDinos to a saltwater fish tank. They are phytoplankton and will light up and provide a good food source for fish.

About how long does the light “turn on” after it’s been stimulated?

The natural bioluminescence is transient and only occurs during movement of the water.

What's the life expectancy?

If properly cared for, Bioluminescent Bio-Orb will last a year or more.

Can I go to the beach and use the ocean water to fill the orb?

No. Ocean water contains many different organisms which are not compatible with the PyroDinos. PyroDinos are special because they are grown alone without other ocean algae and other contaminating organisms.

How and where do I get the salt water?

The Bio-Orb comes with DinoNutrients (Purified Pacific Ocean Seawater with
added nutrients). DinoNutrients is also sold on the PyroFarms website.
