The ancient Egyptians used chariots for hunting and warfare as well as in processions. A chariot team was generally composed of the driver holding a whip and the reigns, the archer (who often carried spears to use when his arrows were spent) and a number of chariot runners who flanked the chariot. However, when hunting (a favorite pastime of the elite Egyptian) the pharaoh would often man the chariot on his own. They are frequently shown in ancient Egyptian art, and several examples of the wooden frames survive, including six dismantled chariots found in King Tutankhamun’s tomb, dating to around 3,300 years ago.
