Freemasonry is the world’s largest international secret fraternal organization that traces its origins to the local fraternities of stonemasons, which from the end of the fourteenth century regulated the qualifications of all masons. Freemasons have been rumored of everything from conspiring with extraterrestrials, to engaging in occult rituals to running the world—or trying to end it. Detractors include global conspiracy theorists and religious organizations. Freemasonry is rich in symbols, and many are ubiquitous— Such as the pentagram, or five-pointed star, or the "all-seeing eye" in the Great Seal of the United States -and the U.S. dollar bill!

It's long been suggested that powerful Freemasons embedded Masonic symbols in the Washington, DC, street plan by "Masonic mapping," detecting pentagrams and other symbols by connecting the dots among landmarks. Freemasons did have a proven role in building the White House, and Masonic symbols can indeed be found throughout the city, as they can in most U.S. cities...

Much has been made of the Freemasons purported lineage to the Knights Templar - The powerful military and religious order that was established to protect medieval pilgrims to the Holy Land. After modern Masonry appeared in the 17th-18th century Britain, some Freemasons claimed to have acquired the secrets (And the treasures) of the Templars and adopted Templar symbols and terminology—naming certain levels of Masonic hierarchy after Templar "degrees," for example.

The list of prominent known Freemasons is impressive, from Napoleon to a staggering amount of US presidents;

-1st US President, George Washington
-5th US President, James Monroe
-7th US President, Andrew Jackson
-11th US President, James Polk
-15th US President, James Buchanan
-17th US President, Andrew Johnson
-20th US President, James A. Garfield
-25th US President, William McKinley
-26th US President, Theodore Roosevelt
-27th US President, Howard Taft Warren Harding
-32nd US President, Franklin D. Roosevelt

Abraham Lincoln applied for membership in Tyrian Lodge, Springfield, Ill., shortly after his nomination for the presidency in 1860 but reportedly withdrew the application because he felt that his applying for membership at that time might be construed as a political ruse to obtain votes. He advised the lodge that he would resubmit his application again when he returned from the presidency - That’s where that story ends, until the issue of this coin by the US Mint in 1939.

Freemasons number over 6 million active members today...
