Does this require a screen?

It does not require a screen. The pipe has a built-in ash pinch to catch
any ash that might accidentally pull through a bowl. If a pipe is brand new
you might have more fall through but after a few uses, the resin buildup in
the bowl will help cling to the Herb without issue.

Is the size of the bowl equivalent to a one-hitter?

It is a standard hand pipe bowl.
