The beads are baked under banana leaves, in a charcoal fire pit, until they achieve their desired color. Simbi was founded in 2013 by longtime friends, Birgit Grossmann Coles and Lori Manuel Steed. Originally from Germany, Birgit moved to Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1995, where she met Lori, a Haitian native, born and bred. In the wake of the devastating 2010 earthquake, Lori and Birgit discovered a way they could support those most affected by the catastrophe, all the while pursuing what they love: art for a cause.

They started creating handcrafted accessories, recognized for their styles, as well as a philanthropic effort to bring clean water to Haitians in desperate need and transforming the lives of those we are able to reach. All of their items are handcrafted in Haiti by local artisans, providing sustainable jobs in a place where there are so few. Simbi provides one-of-a-kind wearable art, empowering those who wear it to share their love for those who could really use some help.

In Haitian Culture, "Simbi Dlo" is the name given to the water spirit, called upon to facilitate solutions to problems. In honor of its namesake, each Simbi sale brings clean water and sustainable jobs to Haiti through the Aqua Haiti Initiative.
