How are they held together?

Simply shelves are held together by the silicone adhesion. However, if you are looking to stack your shelves we strongly recommended Magnetize Me.

That line of product has magnets in the shoes and corners of each board to allow safe stacking, with 2-4 points of magnetic contact.
