Product Description

Simply put, a Stansborough throw is a timeless keepsake. Custom-made from the wool of the Eldridge family’s flock of blue grey sheep, this fabric is unusually silky, soft and lustrous; a special herd of alpacas which live on the farm produce their own special fibers that add warmth and a variety of natural colors to many of the end products.

The Eldridges personally attend the shearing, hand sorting and grading of the fleece of each animal. After the fleece has been professionally worsted spun, the yarn is then woven at their own historic Weaving Mill in Wellington, on looms that came to New Zealand in the early 1900’s — and all of the fibers are dyed in natural stains or biodegradable over-dyed colors. 100% grown, inspired, designed, and created in New Zealand, this throw is totally natural and eco friendly, from the sustainable way the animals are farmed, right through to the hand-finishings.

Cheryl & Barry Eldridge

23 years ago, when Cheryl and Barry Eldridge looked to diversify the farming activities on Stansborough, their New Zealand sheep station, they had no idea the results would eventually be seen on cinema screens around the world. The unique fiber created by their flock of rare grey sheep caught the eyes of Hollywood, and have been used to costume many of the main characters in The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Avatar, and more. Their flock is now registered as "Stansborough Greys," a new wool breed not found anywhere else. The couple also farms a herd of 80 alpacas, maintains forestry plantations, and creates native bush reserves to cancel out their carbon footprint.
