Trompe-l'œil - French for "deceive the eye" - is an art technique that uses realistic imagery to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects exist in three dimensions, similar to forced perspective in architecture. The movement began in the Baroque period, but the idea of perspectival illusionism dates back to 464 BC, and was often employed in ancient Greek and Roman works, and is still often used in murals.
