Product Description

The Sense Lamp by The Bright Angle creates a lighting experience powered by curiosity. This unique porcelain lamp uses capacitive-sensor technology to anticipate your intention to illuminate, turning on just moments before your hand touches the porcelain surface. The sensation is surprising and magical - an organic take on 21st century luxury.

Just as we can touch a glass screen to perform extraordinary actions, the Sense Lamp lets you touch porcelain to illuminate a room. The design reimagines the touch-lamp trend of the '90s, bringing new relevance and familiarity to a modern experience. The metal touch lamps of the past work with electron capacity, utilizing the electrons contained in the human body to trigger illumination through physical contact. The Sense Lamp’s anticipatory lighting experience allows the user to touch porcelain, or nothing at at all, to trigger illumination.

Nick Moen, founder of The Bright Angle, and Shannon Tovey, resident designer, collaborated with electrical engineer Avi Silverman to develop the design, based on the capacitor sensors used in mobile touch screens. The Sense Lamp takes a cutting edge Arduino technology and introduces it into functional home decor. he illuminating dome is made of translucent porcelain, a material that adds another layer of curiosity to the design. When turned off, the dome looks solid and feels like stone, but when it’s illumined it takes on the fragile light diffusing properties of paper or fabric.

Imagine dozing off next to a softly lit bedside lamp. Right as your eyes are getting heavy you have to lean over and search for the switch - so much for drifting off to sleep. With The Sense Lamp, you can simply reach out and hover your hand around the porcelain shade. Click. Off. Sweet dreams.

Our bodies are merely a collection of atoms, each containing a number of protons, neutrons, and a cloud of electrons floating about. Everything from our fingers to our toes consist of these balls and strings of charges, all floating around and sending electrical signals back and forth. That’s not just in our bodies, but everything living around us. So, when we touch something, our atoms are touching other atoms and a reaction occurs.

Think about that: your own body, held together by your very own electromagnetic field, comes into contact with something else and those tiny atoms within you collectively react with the tiny atoms in that other object. This chain reaction sends electrical signals through everything involved, leading to an endless possibility of results. Our bodies hold a voltage that emanates from every surface.

This is why the Sense Lamp features a built-in PCB with a non-contact capacitive sensor. It works by measuring changes in “capacitance” and is the same sensor that is in your phone touch screen, or a track pad, but amplified.
