Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was a French post-Impressionist artist. largely unappreciated until after his death, Gauguin is now recognized for his highly unusual and experimental use of color form, that was different from Impressionism, the movement that inspired him, and Symbolism, the movement he eventually founded. His work was influential to the French avant-garde and many modern artists, such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.
