The Mushlume UFO™ is a solar-powered showpiece for one of the world’s most extraordinary phenomena: bioluminescence. This living art aquarium presents an interactive galaxy of microscopic sea life that glows blue when gently swirled at night.

Bioluminescent plankton—or dinoflagellates— live in the oceans all over the world. When they are present in high concentrations, their bioluminescence becomes visible as beautiful waves of brilliant blue light in the water. The Mushlume UFO™ captures this spectacular natural occurrence in the form of a glowing home accent that's as easy to care for as a houseplant. All you have to do is leave the dinos in a partially sunlit room during the day (making sure to keep them out of direct sunlight) and add a little bit of VitaminSea™ periodically to keep the culture healthy and growing.

Typically, dinoflagellates in the Mushlume UFO will live for approximately 2-3 months on nothing but a little indirect sunlight. Add a little bit of VitaminSea™ nutrients to the Mushlume UFO and you can extend the life of the culture indefinitely. One VitaminSea pouch will last 4-6 weeks depending on how fast your dino culture is growing (and how often you are adding nutrients to the culture). Of course, if you want your dinos to live a long and happy life, keep them in a room that stays between 60°-80°F.

FAQ

What are the life span of the Dino?

The dinoflagellates will live for many years with proper care which is fairly easy. You can care for the dinos much like a low light houseplant. Give them partial light (not direct sun) and room temperature and they will be happy. Every 4-6 weeks, you add seawater and nutrients (VitaminSea).

How long will they last with the provided nutrients?

The pouch of VitaminSea (nutrients for the dinoflagellates) that's included within the initial shipment will keep the dinoflagellates nourished for 2-3 months. The dinos will not instantly perish without nutrients similar to how a houseplant won't die without fertilizer, but they will be a healthier culture with routine upkeep.

Do they have to get partial sunlight everyday or partial sunlight to glow?

The dinoflagellates have a 24-hour circadian rhythm (wake/sleep cycle). They use partial sunlight (or filtered light) each day to produce their energy via photosynthesize. While they can survive for several days without light, the dinoflagellates will be healthiest on a consistent light/dark schedule.

How do I order additional Vitamins?

You can order more VitaminSea from the Urbz website.

Do you use regular tap water, then add the nutrients?

You will add the VitaminSea nutrients that are included in the kit after about 2-4 weeks. Do not add tap water. The dinoflagellates live in a salt water environment and the tap water would harm them. VitaminSea consists of purified sea water and added vitamins and minerals for the dinos.
