Sean Foster has been crafting exceptional wines for 25 years. Over the course of his career as a winemaker, he’s grown fond of every vineyard and every vintages individuality, leading to his own personal winemaking style — where these qualities are the focus of his wines under the Vintone name.
Sean loves analog music — the purity of sound and unique tone expressed by a musician and their instrument fascinate him. He believes that wine can tell a story as well. Every bottle he makes is designed to draw you in.
Sean has had his eye on the Mt. Veeder vineyard in Napa Valley for a while — so making this wine is something like a dream come true. He’s known the owners since 1995, meaning that he’s well aware of the property’s storied history. The first grapes were planted in 1880, and the vineyard continuously farmed until prohibition. The Yates family purchased the property in 1950, and the Mike Yates took over farming in 1995, and began selective replanting in 1999.
Today, Mike and his daughters Whitney and Mary carefully tend the vineyard. The Vintone Cabernet comes from a small, steep 1-acre block of clone 337 on 110R rootstock planted in 2000 sitting at approximately 1,000 ft elevation, facing North West. Napa Valley’s mountain Cabernets are all unique, but share a global reputation for depth and complexity. Sean has become particularly fond of Mt. Veeter’s Cabernet Sauvignon for it’s cooler reflection of the varietal. This expression exhibits the precision of fruit grown high up on the mountain on well drained soils, and naturally lower yields, creating an intensity of varietal expression and sophistication at lower ripeness.
This wine has been more than two decades in the making. Sean created a wine reminiscent of the Napa Cabernets that won his heart and inspired him to pursue winemaking back in his first harvest, 1992.
